The land around the hardened volcano eroded away.  In the meantime, Devil's Tower undergoes a very, very slow erosion, and evidence of that is in the rocks at the bottom of this photo. The gray mud, gray even in good weather, is a result of the acidity of the thermal feature.  Where the feature is alkaline, the edge of the feature is clearly defined.
